A Melodic Sound Bath with Jill

Sound Bath Layout

What is a Sound Bath?

Sound baths are an ancient practice that have been gaining modern popularity. They offer a unique and unconventional path into a deep relaxation state and inner peace. By using various instruments like Tibetan singing bowls and gongs, the attendees could immerse themselves in unique and ethereal sounds and they were able to shake off the stresses of the day. This activity usually takes place with a group of attendees lying on a mat and following the lead of the instructor.

Sound Bath on May 9th 2024

On Thursday the 9th of May, Jill, a facilitator of many practices, guided attendees through an immersive sound bath. Our dance studio at SPCA had been set up with magical fairy lights carefully placed on the floor mimicking the flickering of candles, a few mats for the attendees and an altar with various instruments. As the attendees sat on their mats, Jill handed out sleeping masks infused with essential oils which filled the room with a calming aura. Attendees varied in age and backgrounds, but they were all willing to try new activities.

The session began with a few breathing exercises, which aimed for us to relax and be in control of our breathing. Participants were then encouraged to lay down and close their eyes as Jill showcased her incredible musical skills and filled the room with positive vibrations. A gentle siren-like melody resonated as Jill sang an array of Indian chants, demonstrating both her vocal talent and deep understanding of the chants. As the session progressed, Jill went around the room and placed the singing bowls onto our stomachs and let the vibrations seep through our bodies. We experienced a sense of release from the stresses of our daily lives. The sounds sparked our creativity and let our minds wander freely and we were able to imagine a peaceful setting. It was as if we had stepped into an enchanted forest with birds chirping and a river flowing slowly nearby.

When the session came to an end, we all slowly lifted up from the mats and opened our eyes. Everyone seemed calm, relaxed, and ready for the week ahead. Jill went around the room and personally thanked everyone for coming.
